Choose the right material

Countertop materials compared for Florida.

Salt air, UV exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles demand specific material choices. Here's how engineered stone, natural stone, and alternatives stack up in Florida's climate.

Material Coastal Safe Sealer Needed Fade Risk (sun) Maintenance
Quartz (engineered) ✓ Best Never None Wipe clean
Porcelain ✓ Best Never None Wipe clean
Quartzite ✓ Yes Annual Low Reseal yearly
Granite Marginal Every 18 mo. Medium Reseal regularly
Marble ✗ Not recommended Every 6 mo. High (2 yrs) High (etching)

For Florida coastal homes (within 5 miles of saltwater): We recommend quartz indoors, porcelain outdoors. Both are non-porous, salt-resistant, and require zero sealing. Quartzite works for coastal use if resealed annually. Granite needs marine-grade hardware (316 stainless) and 12-month sealer reapplication to resist salt-air corrosion of hinges and edges.

Florida-specific challenges

Countertops for salt air and sun.

Panama City sits on the Gulf coast. 10+ years of fabricating and installing countertops in salt-air environments taught us which materials survive Florida's climate—and which don't.

Salt-Air Corrosion

Salt spray penetrates up to 5 miles inland, corroding standard hardware within 12 months. Marine-grade 316 stainless on coastal installs + annual sealer reapplication on granite and quartzite.

UV Fading

Direct Gulf sun fades quartz within 2 summers. Porcelain and sealed quartzite hold color indefinitely. For outdoor kitchens, porcelain is non-negotiable. Marble and granite fade in 18–24 months.

Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Water penetrates porous stone, freezes, expands, and cracks in spring. Quartz and porcelain are immune. Natural stone needs annual sealing and drainage. In North Florida, we default to non-porous.

Maintenance Reality

High-maintenance stone costs more over 10 years than quartz or porcelain. Factor in sealer reapplication every 6–18 months, hardware replacement, edge re-honing. Budget sealing as yearly expense.

Edge profiles

Six edges. One for every kitchen.

The edge is the first thing your hand touches and the last thing the eye sees. We machine and hand-polish all six profiles in-house — no third-party finishing, no inconsistent sample.

Eased

Subtle 1/8″ radius

Beveled

Crisp 45° cut

Ogee

Classic S-curve

Bullnose

Full half-round

Waterfall

Mitered 90° drop

Mitered

Looking for a profile not listed? We custom-grind any radius on request.

Fabrication precision

Invisible seams: how we do it.

Every countertop 8 feet or longer needs at least one seam. The difference between a visible seam and an invisible one is precision—from measurement to finish.

1

Laser Templating to 1/16″

Seam invisibility starts at measurement. We laser-template every cutout, edge, and seam location to 1/16-inch accuracy. This precision ensures slabs fit flush with zero gaps.

2

Color-Matched Epoxy

Each slab gets color-matched epoxy mixed to ±0.5mm tolerance of the stone's veining pattern. We hand-tint on-site to match granite pigment. Result: the epoxy reads as a natural continuation of stone.

3

Vein Matching

For marble and quartzite, we book-match slabs so veining flows continuously across the seam. The eye follows the vein, not the seam. Results in invisible seams up close.

4

Hand-Polished Finish

We finish every seam by hand with diamond pads matching the slab's polish level (honed, polished, leathered). The epoxy catches light exactly like surrounding stone.

The Result: Unfelt and Unseen

Customers run their hand across a 12-foot island and can't locate the seam by touch. Visually, the seam disappears into the stone's pattern. This is why we offer a seam invisibility guarantee—if you can see it from 12 inches away in normal light, we'll re-work it at no cost.

Our story

A family-owned shop, fabricating for Florida since 2016.

Pro Build Countertop Company has fabricated and installed countertops across Florida for over 10 years. We started as a family-owned shop in Panama City and grew by saying yes to the harder jobs — outdoor kitchens facing the Gulf, coastal homes with salt-air exposure, and full-house remodels where the countertop has to land on the day the cabinets go in.

Today our crews template, fabricate in-house, and install across the state. The same person who measures your kitchen will be there when the slab goes in. One project, one team, one warranty.

Templated on Tuesday, installed on Friday. The seam in my 12-foot island is invisible — I can't even feel it with my hand. The whole crew was respectful and clean.

We picked porcelain for the outdoor kitchen and quartzite inside. Two completely different materials, same crew, perfect coordination. Florida sun hasn't faded a thing in two summers.

Got three quotes. Pro Build was the only one who showed up on time, brought slab samples, and put a written estimate in my inbox the next morning. Hired them. No regrets.

FAQs

Florida countertop questions, answered honestly.

No fluff, no marketing speak. Real answers from the same crew that will template your kitchen.

How long does the whole countertop process take?

Most projects run 10–14 days from template to install. Day 1 is the free in-home consultation; we then schedule a slab-yard visit, template within a week of cabinets being set, fabricate in 5–7 days, and install in a single day for most kitchens.

Do I need to be home for the install?

Yes for the template appointment (we measure with you and confirm sink and cooktop cutouts) and for the final walkthrough. The install itself can be done with the homeowner present or absent — the crew brings everything needed and texts photos when complete.

Will the seams be visible?

In quartz: typically not — color-matched epoxy and tight templating make seams nearly invisible. In natural stone with strong veining we vein-match across seams whenever possible. We always walk through seam placement before fabrication so you know where they'll land.

What about the salt air on the coast?

Coastal Florida has aggressive salt-air corrosion that affects sealer wear and hardware. For coastal homes we recommend porcelain or quartz outdoors, increase sealer reapplication frequency on granite/quartzite (annually instead of every 18 months), and spec marine-grade hardware on undermount sink brackets.

Do you handle the demolition of my old countertop?

Yes. Tear-out, plumbing disconnect, sink removal, disposal — all included in our replacement service. Your old top is hauled away and recycled where possible. We protect floors and adjacent surfaces with drop cloths and leave the kitchen broom-clean.

What's your warranty?

Two layers. The manufacturer warranty on the slab itself (varies by brand — typically 10 years to lifetime depending on the line you choose), and our written installation guarantee covering seam shift, edge chip from install, and sealer issues that come from our work. Specific terms are spelled out on every contract before you sign — no fine-print surprises.

Which material handles a Florida kitchen best?

For interior kitchens in Florida the most popular choice is engineered quartz — non-porous, sealer-free, virtually maintenance-free. For luxury veining with more durability than marble, quartzite is the move. Outdoors we strongly recommend porcelain (UV-stable, freeze-thaw stable, salt-air resistant).

How does an outdoor kitchen install differ from indoor?

Outdoor installs have to handle UV exposure, salt air, hurricane-zone wind loads, and grilling-zone heat. We spec UV-stable porcelain or sealed quartzite, use marine-grade fastening, and design grill-island ventilation properly. Cabinet substrate matters more outdoors than indoors.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — Florida specialty contractor, fully insured (general liability + workers' compensation), and bonded. Documentation is provided on request before any work begins. We pull all required permits and schedule inspections under our license.

How fast will you respond?

5 minutes — every time, on every quote request. Day or night, we open every inquiry as it lands. The first conversation is always free and pressure-free.

Can I see real slabs before deciding?

Always. Every project includes a free yard visit — we walk you through the actual slabs you can choose from at our slab partners across the Panhandle. You pick the slab. We don't substitute. Photos and SKUs go on the contract.

Do you handle commercial and hospitality projects?

Yes. Hotel reception desks, restaurant counters, retail build-outs, and office kitchenettes. NSF-rated material spec for food contact, after-hours installs to minimize downtime, and project-specific scheduling around your soft-launch date.
